Hamp Residents’ re-design hailed as a great success

colourfulDIY Streets, a project run by Sustrans with Hamp residents, has been celebrated as a huge success by local people. As a community-led design project, it took account of issues that residents care about to change the public space for a stronger sense of community to give a ‘feel-good factor’.  This included slowing traffic, sorting parking issues and improving public space. Members of the community were involved at every stage of the decision making process.

It gave a unique opportunity to local people to have their say on how they wanted their streets to be. This project gave a voice to the residents and helped to create public spaces suitable for people to meet, socialise, and play.  On a long term basis it is hoped that community members will be the people running community-based projects.
